Plant description | Small tree to 6 m. Bark greyish-brown, bark slash does not change colour, and older twigs show a spongy core. Stipule up to 1 cm long and violet in colour. Leaves clustered near branch apex and up to 43 x 21 cm. Leaf colour adaxially dark green, abaxially pale green. Inflorescences mostly terminal on branches, but some were in axillary. Inflorescence peduncle and calyx orange/red, corolla bright yellow. Unripe fruit same colour as calyx and peduncle but changing to black when ripe. |
Locality and habit remarks | South facing hill in tropical lowland evergreen rain forest. The tree grew in a semi lightopen enviroment because of the path, but several trees in the close vicinity were up to 40 m tall. Soil contained a lot of clay and plant detritus. The tree was found growing several other places along the road. Follow the road from the entrance to Rio Claro reserve towards San luis. As you pass a small collection of houses on both sides of the road, look for a gravel path just as you pass the last house on the left. Follow the path and after the fourth bend look for a cement drainage channel below a steep slope. The tree is growing on the edge of the forest at the top of the slope above the cement drain. |
